Posted 2008-02-13 13:58:40: Amazon.com: The soprano Lesley Garrett joins her regular TV partners, the BBC Concert Orchestra for this razzle-dazzle collection of big hits from the golden age of Tinseltown. The 15 tracks, including a Gershwin medley, celebrate those would-be operatic sopranos who traded their art on screen instead of live on the stage. The well-researched booklet lists them, from Grace Moore to Deanna Durbin. The disc opens with Rodgers and Hart's breezy "With a Song in My Heart", which evokes Sunday lunchtime in British households 30 years ago as it was the theme tune for Radio 2's Family Favourites. It is loud, brassy, bombastic and self-satisfied just like Hollywood itself. This remains the character of the entire disc, although Jerome Kern's and Otto Harbach's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and the traditional Irish song "Danny Boy" deliver a more reflective mood. Garrett sings everything with her shrill enthusiasm and optimistic tone although she sometimes lets her control sag and phrase-ends disappear. She is deliciously catty in Jacob Gade's "Jealousy", seductively sultry in Cole Porter's "So in Love" and gives extra value in Rodgers and Hart's "Lover", where she double-tracks herself. The arrangements are by Paul Bateman, who also conducts. -- Rick Jones
