Philip Chaffin exudes class in this collection of songs from old Hollywood, ranging from timeless ballads ("Easy to Love," "Love Is Here to Stay," "At Last") to the forgotten title tune (cut from MGM's 1951 Red Skelton vehicle Excuse My Dust) using luscious period orchestrations or new charts in the same spirit. Producer Tommy Krasker and conductor Eric Stern's previous collaborations have included outstanding albums for Dawn Upshaw and Audra McDonald, and the marvelous restoration of the Gershwins' Oh Kay! (on which Chaffin sung in the chorus), and they've got another winner here. --David Horiuchi |
