Amazon.com Editoral Review: A film from a play from an album from a song by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, this production had a most unusual evolution. Its life as a stage show began in New York in 1971; the London version opened the next year and ran for 3,358 performances. Norman Jewison directed the 1973 film on location in Israel with Tim Neeley as Christ, Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, and Carl Anderson as Judas Iscariot. It purports to recreate the last days of the life of Christ through the medium of rock, pop, and other modern styles of music. ("King Herod's Song" is a kind of retro-ragtime.) The New York and London Original Cast versions are also available, along with highlights from both and a later revisitation called Jesus Christ Superstar: A Resurrection. --Stanley Booth > 2 Comments
